Hasan Mahmud's six-for bowls West Indies out for 356, but Bangladesh lose two early wickets as Shadman's injury adds to the worry
On the second day of the Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud took six wickets in an innings on home soil for the first time, helping the hosts bowl West Indies out for 356. Yet the pressure remains firmly on Bangladesh, who lost both openers inside the first five overs of their reply, slipping to 22 for two. The bigger concern is the injury to Shadman Islam, who had to be carried off on a stretcher after hurting his left ankle while fielding. If he is unable to bat, it will be a major blow for the home side.
West Indies resumed on 235 for four, with Aamir Jangoo unbeaten on 111 and Justin Greaves on 35. Bangladesh needed early breakthroughs with the new ball, and Hasan Mahmud provided them. West Indies lost four wickets in the first session of the day, three of them to Hasan alone, and the visitors' grip on the game began to loosen.
Hasan struck twice in successive deliveries. First he bowled centurion Aamir Jangoo, settling a personal score after dropping a return catch off the same batsman on the opening day. Jangoo faced 212 balls and hit 13 fours and two sixes in his 133. Off the very next ball, Hasan had captain Roston Chase caught behind for a golden duck. Hasan was on a hat-trick, and the hat-trick delivery produced an lbw verdict against Joshua Bishop, but the batsman reviewed and replays showed the ball had hit the bat, so the decision was overturned. Bishop did not survive long, though, as Hasan had him stumped. In the second session Hasan bowled Shamar Joseph to complete his sixth wicket, the second time in his career he has taken six in an innings.
Apart from Jangoo, Justin Greaves made a useful 51. Jomel Warrican finished unbeaten on 27 and added 33 for the last wicket with Jayden Seales, pushing the total to 356. Mehidy Hasan Miraz broke that stand by dismissing Seales and finished with two wickets. Taskin Ahmed, who had taken two wickets on day one, could not add to his tally on the second day, leaving Hasan and Miraz to carry the bowling load.
Hasan's effort carried extra significance. He already holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls by a Bangladesh fast bowler, and this innings added another to that count. He also became the second Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul against five different Test-playing nations. Six wickets in an innings at home is a first for him and underlines his growing maturity. He also showed that on a Sylhet pitch where batsmen settle in, fast bowling remains the surest route back into the contest.
The most talked-about and worrying moment of the day was Shadman Islam's injury. It came inside the first hour, off the first ball of the 78th over bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, when Aamir Jangoo flicked to the leg side. Shadman chased the ball towards the boundary and, as he bent low to stop it, his left ankle stuck in the ground and he collapsed in severe pain. The physio rushed out and tried to treat him, but there was little improvement. Shadman covered his face with both hands in agony before eventually being stretchered off.
The seriousness of the injury was evident from the fact that he did not come out to bat during Bangladesh's innings. If he cannot return, the team may have to play with one batsman short, which is a significant setback in Test cricket. Shadman's form was also important for the hosts, and his absence weakens the top order.
Amid those worries, Bangladesh began their reply but lost their opening stand in the fifth over. Jayden Seales had Naeem Hasan caught by Brandon King for five. Tanzid Hasan Tamim then fell to Justin Greaves for 16, leaving Bangladesh 22 for two and under even more pressure chasing 356.
On day one, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl. Taskin Ahmed's two early wickets gave the hosts a brief spell of dominance, but West Indies gradually took control. By stumps the visitors were 245 for four, with Jangoo and Greaves sharing a century stand for the fifth wicket. Jangoo had already completed his hundred on day one and built on it the next morning before Hasan ended the partnership and gave Bangladesh a way back into the match.
The contest now hinges on how Bangladesh's middle order responds. The team needs a big partnership because batting long is essential to answering 356. West Indies, meanwhile, have a centurion in Jangoo and a pace threat in Seales, who made an immediate impact with the new ball. Shadman's injury has deepened Bangladesh's troubles, so the responsibility on the remaining batsmen has doubled. If a substantial partnership materialises on this Sylhet surface, the hosts can fight back; otherwise the visitors will take a first-innings lead and tighten their grip on the match.
