Peres Jepchirchir Suspended: Olympic Marathon Champion Fails EPO Test
Olympic and world marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO. The 33-year-old Kenyan provided the sample before winning the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026 in a time of two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds. Jepchirchir won the race by more than three minutes from compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai. The sample was given in Kenya before the event. EPO, or erythropoietin, is a natural hormone produced in the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the muscles. When injected, it can be detected in urine or blood only for a limited window, making timing and sample collection important in anti-doping cases. The provisional suspension is not a final finding of guilt, and the athlete will have an opportunity to respond through the established disciplinary process. Jepchirchir became Olympic women's marathon champion at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and returned to Tokyo to win the World Championships in September 2026. She broke the women's half-marathon world record in 2026 and on three occasions in 2026. Her major marathon wins include New York in 2026, Boston in 2026 and London in 2026. Sydney became the seventh world major in 2026. The case has cast a shadow over her recent victory and raised questions about the sport's anti-doping framework, but the final outcome will depend on the completed investigation and hearing process.
