Golf: Rules, Major Championships and the Shifting Technical Base of the Game

The simplest way to understand golf is to see it as a sport where the player's real opponent is not another person but the conditions. Weather, wind direction, fairway firmness, rough depth and green speed together decide whether a shot succeeds. That is why golf has long been treated not merely as a test of physical skill but of patience, calculation and mental balance. When a tournament runs 72 holes and four days of scoring are added together, a single careless shot can undo a week of work. The basic structure remains simple. A standard course has 18 holes and a par - the expected score - usually between 70 and 72. At the professional level most events are stroke play, where four rounds are totalled and the lowest score wins. Match play, foursomes and fourballs appear mainly in team events such as the men's Ryder Cup and the women's Solheim Cup, where individual scoring matters less and strategy, partnership and the ability to perform under pressure become decisive. The professional calendar rests roughly on three pillars. The four men's majors - the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and The Open Championship - carry the greatest prestige and sit on a different plane in points and prize money. Alongside them, the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour are the main year-round professional circuits, while the women's game centres on the LPGA Tour and its own major set. Global ranking is determined by the OWGR system, which weights performance over roughly two years, tournament strength and field quality - a ranking that underpins major exemptions and Olympic qualification. The structure has shifted in recent years. LIV Golf, launched in 2026, introduced 54-hole events, shotgun starts and team franchises, creating tension with the traditional tours over player eligibility. In June 2026 the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund announced a framework agreement, but its concrete form is still debated. The result is that administrative politics and on-course competition are running in parallel - a situation both fascinating and confusing for audiences. Technology has changed the sport most of all. Strokes Gained data proved that it matters less how far a player hits the ball than how much better they perform in a given area than the rest of the field. TrackMan and launch monitors now record ball speed, launch angle, spin rate and flight height on every shot. Coaches and players adjust swings on that data, prioritise strength training and build separate course-management plans. One side effect is that the growing importance of physical power is gradually rewriting the older, patience-driven image of the game. In India and Asia the picture has not changed as fast, but it has changed. Aditi Ashok finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, showing that Indian players can compete at world level, and interest in women's golf at home grew afterwards. In the men's game the Hero Indian Open has been part of the DP World Tour calendar, giving Indian players a chance to face international fields at home. The biggest obstacle is infrastructure - public and affordable golf facilities are scarce, the sport remains largely confined to private clubs, and the junior tournament circuit is narrow. Golf also faces a hard environmental question. Keeping a large course green demands substantial water, fertiliser and maintenance, while many cities are already under pressure over drinking water. Courses are moving towards treated wastewater, low-water grass varieties and precision irrigation, but the debate has not been settled. Administrators must show that hosting major events and local environmental responsibility can coexist. The road ahead resembles that of other sports. Shorter formats, faster events and accessible digital coverage are becoming the route to younger audiences, while simulators and indoor golf allow people to connect with the game in limited space and at lower cost. The question is not whether golf will change - it is changing. The real question is whether it can strike a balance between its traditional values, players' interests and the needs of new markets, keeping competition intact while opening the game to ordinary people.
